An attenuator reduces (attenuates/diminishes) the incoming or amplified signal, especially where multiple indoor antennas are used (DAS). The attenuator will then attenuate closer antennas to the booster by a measured amount so that all indoor antennas will produce the same coverage/output (the same indoor signal strength throughout) the installation.
An attenuator can also be utilized to attenuate the incoming signal (RSSI) when it is too strong, causing the repeater to oscillate (the alarm LED or the LCD indicator will alert you). Amplitec repeater has an AGC (automatic gain control) to address this. If it gets to a level where the Amplitec repeater can not control it the ASO (auto shut-off) will turn the repeater off and a technician will rectify the problem.
